Charcoal vs Clay for Oily Skin: How They Differ

If you have oily skin, you have probably seen two ingredients everywhere: activated charcoal and clay. Both are popular in purifying skincare, but they are usually used in different ways. Here is how they compare.

Activated charcoal

Activated charcoal is a very porous form of carbon. In skincare it is used in purifying products such as nose strips and cleansers, designed to help lift dirt and oil from the skin's surface.

The Charcoal Detox Nose Strips come in a pack of 12 and combine activated charcoal with tea tree oil, witch hazel and aloe vera. They are vegan and cruelty-free. You wet your nose, apply the strip, leave it for 10 to 15 minutes and peel it off. Use them 1 to 2 times a week, with 3 days between uses.

Clay

Clays such as multani mitti (Fuller's earth) and kaolin have been used on skin for generations. In face masks they absorb excess oil and help unclog pores, leaving skin feeling fresh.

The Revive Face Mask combines multani mitti and kaolin with rose flower extract, aloe vera, kapoor kachri and haldi, and chandan and nagarmotha. Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes and use it 2 to 3 times a week.

Using both in one week

Because they work on different areas, charcoal and clay can fit together, as long as you do not overdo it:

  • Monday: clay mask on the face.
  • Wednesday: nose strip.
  • Friday: clay mask.
  • Sunday: nose strip.

Avoid using a nose strip and a clay mask on the nose on the same day. Moisturise after both.

Tips for oily skin

  • Do not strip your skin. Over-cleansing can leave oily skin feeling tight and uncomfortable.
  • Still moisturise, with a light gel texture if you prefer.
  • Wear sunscreen every day.
  • Rinse clay before it cracks and pulls.
  • Peel strips slowly, from the edges inwards.

Who should go slowly

If your skin is sensitive, dry in places or easily irritated, start with fewer uses a week and patch-test first. Do not use strips or masks on broken skin, sunburn or active, painful spots.

Common mistakes

  • Using strips every day.
  • Leaving clay on for an hour.
  • Scrubbing after a mask.
  • Skipping moisturiser because your skin is oily.

Quick questions

Which is better for oily skin? Neither is better overall. A clay mask suits the whole face or oily zones, while charcoal nose strips focus on the nose. Many people use both on different days.

Can I use them if I have dry skin? Use clay only on oily areas, less often, and moisturise well afterwards. Patch-test first.

Will they shrink my pores? Pore size is largely set by your skin. Masks and strips help skin feel cleaner and look fresher.
