Clay Mask vs Overnight Mask: Which One Does Your Skin Need?

Face masks come in many types, but two of the most popular work in almost opposite ways. A clay mask is a short, purifying treatment. An overnight mask is a hydrating layer you sleep in. Knowing the difference helps you pick the right one, or use both.

What a clay mask does

Clay masks use clays such as multani mitti (Fuller's earth) and kaolin to absorb excess oil and help unclog pores. They are applied for a short time and rinsed off.

The Revive Face Mask combines multani mitti and kaolin with rose flower extract, aloe vera, kapoor kachri and haldi, and chandan and nagarmotha. You leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes and use it 2 to 3 times a week.

What an overnight mask does

Overnight masks, also called sleeping masks, are hydrating layers you apply as the last step of your night routine and rinse off in the morning.

The HydraRenew Collagen Overnight Mask combines hyaluronic acid, hydrolyzed collagen, multi-peptides and aloe vera. It goes on face and neck at night, leaves no residue on your pillow, and is rinsed off in the morning.

Which one suits your skin?

  • Oily skin: a clay mask is a natural fit. Add an overnight mask on nights when skin feels tight.
  • Dry skin: an overnight mask is the main pick. Use a clay mask rarely, or only on oily areas.
  • Combination skin: use clay on the T-zone and hydration everywhere.
  • Normal skin: either, depending on how your skin feels that week.
  • Sensitive skin: patch-test both, and start with fewer uses a week.

Using both in one week

Many people like both. A simple pattern:

  • Monday and Thursday: clay mask after cleansing, then moisturiser.
  • Tuesday, Friday and Sunday: overnight mask as the last step.
  • Other nights: your usual routine.

Avoid doing both on the same night at first, so you can see how your skin responds to each.

Tips for better results

  • Start with clean skin for either mask.
  • Do not let clay dry until it cracks and pulls. Rinse within the time on the label.
  • Moisturise after a clay mask.
  • Use a clean pillowcase on overnight mask nights.
  • Wear sunscreen every morning.

Common mistakes

  • Using a clay mask every day. Skin can feel dry.
  • Applying an overnight mask too thickly. A thin, even layer is enough.
  • Expecting one mask to do everything. Each has a different job.
