How Much Hair Oil Should You Use? A Simple Guide by Hair Type
Share
Hair oiling is one of the oldest hair care rituals in India. One question comes up again and again: how much oil should you actually use? Too much leaves hair greasy and hard to wash. Too little barely reaches the scalp. Here is a simple guide.
Start smaller than you think
Most people use more oil than they need. You can always add a little more, but removing extra oil means more shampoo and more rubbing. Start small and adjust.
A rough guide by hair length
| Hair length | Starting amount |
|---|---|
| Short (above the ears) | About half a teaspoon |
| Shoulder length | About 1 teaspoon |
| Long (mid-back) | About 1 to 2 teaspoons |
| Very long or very thick | About 2 to 3 teaspoons |
These are only starting points. Adjust to how your hair feels and how easily the oil washes out.
Adjust for hair type
- Fine or oily hair: use the lower end, mostly on the lengths.
- Thick, curly or dry hair: you may need a little more on the lengths and ends.
- Oily scalp: only a few drops on the scalp, more on the ends. See hair care for an oily scalp.
How to apply
- Detangle dry hair gently with a wide-tooth comb.
- Part hair into sections.
- Put a little oil on your fingertips, not straight from the bottle onto your head.
- Massage the scalp in small circles for a few minutes.
- Smooth what is left over the lengths and ends.
The Hair Revival Oil is a 100ml oil with bhringraj, amla, onion seed and black seed oil. It has a lightweight, fast-absorbing formula, is made for all hair types and genders, and is paraben and sulfate-free.
How long to leave it
- An hour or two before washing works for most people.
- Overnight is a tradition for some, but it suits drier hair and scalps better than oily ones.
How often
Once or twice a week before washing is enough for most people.
Signs you used too much
- Hair still feels greasy after one wash.
- Oil drips onto your neck or pillow.
- You need to shampoo two or three times.
Next time, use less, especially on the scalp.
Washing it out
- Apply shampoo to the scalp before wetting hair fully, if your hair is very oily.
- Massage with fingertips.
- Rinse with lukewarm water.
- Repeat once if needed.
Common mistakes
- Pouring oil straight onto the head.
- Rubbing hard with the palms, which tangles hair.
- Oiling every day and washing every day with harsh shampoo.
