How to Apply Sunscreen Properly: Amount, Timing and Reapplying
Share
Sunscreen is one of the most useful steps in any skincare routine, but many people apply too little, miss key spots or forget to reapply. Getting it right is simple once you know the basics.
Where it goes in your routine
- Cleanse
- Serum, if you use one
- Moisturiser
- Sunscreen, as the last skincare step
- Makeup, if you wear it
How much to use
Most people use far less than they need. A common guide is the two-finger rule: squeeze a line of sunscreen along the length of your index and middle fingers. That is roughly enough for the face and neck.
How to apply
- Dot it on your forehead, cheeks, nose, chin and neck.
- Spread evenly, without rubbing hard.
- Do not forget the edges: hairline, ears, jawline and the sides of the neck.
- Let it settle for a few minutes before makeup or going out.
Spots people often miss
- Ears, front and back
- Back of the neck
- Hairline and parting
- Around the eyes, carefully, avoiding the eyes themselves
- Backs of the hands
- Lips (use a lip balm with sun protection)
When to apply
Apply in the morning, about 15 minutes before you go out. Wear it every day, including cloudy days, and on days you spend near windows or in a car.
When to reapply
- Every 2 hours when you are outdoors.
- After swimming, heavy sweating or towel drying.
- Before going out again in the afternoon if you were indoors all morning.
Follow the directions on your sunscreen, as products vary.
Choosing a sunscreen
- Broad spectrum, protecting against UVA and UVB.
- A texture you like enough to wear daily: gel, lotion or cream.
- Water-resistant for swimming and sports.
- Patch-test if you have sensitive skin.
Sunscreen is one part of sun care
- Seek shade in the strongest midday sun.
- Wear a hat, sunglasses and light, covering clothes.
- Drink water on hot days.
Common mistakes
- Using a tiny amount.
- Applying only in summer.
- Relying on makeup alone for sun protection.
- Never reapplying on long days out.
- Forgetting the neck and ears.

Sunscreen and makeup
Apply sunscreen first and let it settle for a few minutes before foundation or powder. Makeup with sun protection is a nice extra, but most people do not apply enough of it to rely on it alone.
A morning checklist
- Two-finger amount for face and neck
- Ears, hairline and back of the neck
- Backs of the hands
- Lip balm
- Sunglasses and a hat for long days outdoors

Quick questions
Do I need sunscreen indoors? If you sit near windows or step out during the day, it is a good daily habit.
Can I use body sunscreen on my face? Many people prefer a face sunscreen with a lighter texture. Patch-test either way.
