How to Store Skincare Products So They Last
Share
You have found products that suit your skin. The next step is making sure they stay fresh until the last drop. Indian homes can get hot and humid, and bathrooms are often the warmest, dampest room in the house. A few simple storage habits help your skincare last.
The three things products dislike
- Heat: a hot windowsill, a car dashboard or a spot next to the geyser.
- Light: direct sunlight can affect some ingredients.
- Air and water: open lids and wet fingers can spoil products faster.
Where to keep them
- A cool, dry cupboard or drawer is ideal for most skincare.
- Away from the shower and geyser, if your bathroom gets steamy.
- Out of direct sunlight.
- Out of reach of children.
Serums
Vitamin C serums like the Brightfix C-Serum, with orange and lemon extracts, and glutathione serums like the 30ml Theraglow Glutathione Serum should be kept tightly closed in a cool, dark place. Use a clean dropper and do not let it touch your skin. Always follow the storage instructions on the pack.
Creams and gels
Close lids after every use. For jars, use a clean spatula or clean, dry fingers. This applies to products like the Night Repair Cream and Time Rewind Gel.
Face masks
Keep jars and tubes like the Revive Face Mask closed tightly, so the mask does not dry out. Scoop with a clean spatula and never add water to the jar.
Hair oils and masks
Hair oils such as the 100ml Hair Revival Oil and hair masks like the 50g Root Revival Hair Mask should be kept away from heat and sunlight. Close the cap well, especially if you keep them in the bathroom.
Nose strips
Keep the pack sealed and dry, and store strips flat so they keep their shape.
Face tools
A bronze Kansa Wand should be wiped clean after each use, dried completely and stored in its cotton pouch. Bronze can naturally darken over time, which is normal.
Should you keep skincare in the fridge?
Most products do not need it, and some can change texture in the cold. A cool cupboard is usually enough. If a pack says to refrigerate, follow it. Many people enjoy keeping an eye gel or face mist in the fridge in summer for a cooling feel.
Signs a product has gone off
- The smell has changed or become sour.
- The colour has changed noticeably.
- The texture has separated, become lumpy or watery.
- It stings or irritates when it did not before.
If you notice any of these, stop using it.
Check the pack
Many products show an expiry date or a small open-jar symbol with a number like "12M", meaning it is best used within 12 months of opening. Write the date you opened a product on the pack with a marker.
Travel tips
- Do not leave products in a hot car.
- Pack liquids in a sealed pouch.
- Use small travel containers instead of carrying full jars.
Quick questions
Is it fine to keep skincare in the bathroom? If it stays cool and dry, yes. If it gets hot and steamy, choose a bedroom drawer instead.
Can I share my products? It is more hygienic not to share jars that you dip your fingers into.
