Kaolin Clay for Face: The Gentle Clay, Explained
Share
Clay masks have been used for centuries, and in India multani mitti is the best-known. But many modern masks also include kaolin, a soft white clay. Here is what kaolin is, how it compares with multani mitti, and how to use a mask that contains both.
What is kaolin clay?
Kaolin is a fine, soft clay, usually white or very pale. It is one of the most widely used clays in skincare and is known for being gentle. It is often called China clay.
What it does for the face
- Absorbs excess oil from the surface of the skin.
- Helps unclog pores and lift away dirt.
- Leaves a soft matte finish that many people with oily skin like.
- Feels gentle, which is why it is often chosen for masks that suit more skin types.
Kaolin vs multani mitti
| Kaolin | Multani mitti | |
|---|---|---|
| Also called | China clay, white clay | Fuller's earth |
| Feel | Soft, gentle | Strong oil absorption |
| Best for | Most skin types, including normal and combination | Oily skin especially |
| Traditional use | Widely used in modern skincare | A classic Indian face pack ingredient |
Many masks combine the two, so you get multani mitti's oil-absorbing power and kaolin's gentler feel.
A mask with kaolin and multani mitti
The Theraglam Revive Face Mask combines multani mitti and kaolin to absorb excess oil, unclog pores and give a refreshing matte finish. It also includes:
- Rose flower extract and aloe vera, to soothe and hydrate.
- Kapoor kachri and haldi, traditionally used in detoxifying packs.
- Chandan and nagarmotha, to help even out skin tone.
- Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.
How to use it
- Cleanse your face and pat it dry.
- Apply an even layer, avoiding the eyes and lips.
- Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes. Do not let it crack and dry for much longer.
- Rinse with lukewarm water, using soft circular motions.
- Pat dry and moisturise.
Use it two to three times a week. Dry or sensitive skin may prefer once a week.
Who it suits
- Oily skin: two to three times a week.
- Combination skin: on the T-zone, or all over once a week.
- Normal skin: once a week as a refresh.
- Dry skin: occasionally, for a shorter time, always with moisturiser after.
Tips for better results
- Apply to clean skin so the clay can work on oil and dirt, not makeup.
- Use a thin, even layer. Thicker is not better.
- Follow with hydration. A serum or moisturiser after a clay mask keeps skin comfortable.
Common mistakes
- Leaving the mask on for an hour. Too long can leave skin tight.
- Scrubbing it off hard. Rinse gently.
- Using it every day.
