Night Shift Skincare: Caring for Your Skin When You Work Nights
Share
Nurses, call centre staff, security teams, drivers, factory workers and many others work through the night. Night shifts can leave skin looking tired and feeling dry, especially in air-conditioned offices. A routine built around your own day, rather than the clock, makes care easier.
Think "start of shift" and "end of shift"
Instead of morning and night, plan your skincare around when you wake and when you sleep.
When you wake up (before your shift)
- Gentle cleanse or a splash of water.
- Serum, if you use one.
- Moisturiser, a little richer if you work in air conditioning.
- Sunscreen if it is still daylight when you travel to work.
When you get home (before sleep)
- Cleanse to remove sunscreen, sweat and the dust of your commute.
- Serum or treatment, if you use one.
- Moisturiser or night cream. Treat this as your "night" routine, even if it is morning outside.
Note: if you leave work in bright morning sun, wear sunscreen on the way home too, then cleanse before bed.
During your shift
- Keep a water bottle at your desk and sip regularly.
- Carry a small moisturiser and lip balm for dry, air-conditioned rooms.
- Take short breaks to stand, stretch and rest your eyes from screens.
- Avoid touching your face often, especially with gloves or after handling shared equipment.
Sleep in the day, well
Sleep is where night workers often struggle most, and it affects how tired your face looks.
- Make your room dark with heavy curtains or an eye mask.
- Keep it quiet with earplugs or a fan for steady background noise.
- Keep a regular sleep time on work days, as far as you can.
- Avoid heavy meals and caffeine in the few hours before you sleep.
- Put your phone away before bed and silence notifications.
Food on night shifts
- Eat a proper meal before your shift.
- Pack light, healthy snacks like fruit, nuts, roasted chana or curd instead of fried snacks and sweets.
- Go easy on endless tea and coffee, especially in the last part of your shift.
- Have a light meal when you get home, not a huge one.
Days off
On days off, many people switch back to a daytime schedule. Try not to swing too far, and protect your sleep where you can. Use the extra time for a face mask, a longer face massage or some exercise.
Common mistakes
- Falling asleep without cleansing after a long shift.
- Skipping moisturiser in dry office air.
- Forgetting sunscreen on morning commutes home.
- Living on caffeine and sugar to get through the night.
