Onion Seed and Black Seed Oil for Hair: What They Do
Share
Onion seed oil and black seed oil (kalonji) are two of the most talked-about ingredients in Indian hair care. Here is what they bring to a hair oil, and how to make them part of a routine you will actually stick with.
Onion seed oil
Onion seed oil comes from the seeds of the onion plant, not the bulb, so it does not carry the strong smell of onion juice. In hair care it is used to nourish the scalp and is popular among people looking to reduce hair shedding.
Black seed oil (kalonji)
Black seed oil is pressed from the small black seeds of Nigella sativa, known in Indian kitchens as kalonji. It is valued in hair care for nourishing dry, brittle strands and conditioning the scalp.
Why blends work better than single oils
Most people get on better with a blend than a single oil, because each ingredient brings something different. Our Hair Revival Oil (100ml) combines four:
- Bhringraj, a traditional Ayurvedic herb for hair.
- Amla, rich in antioxidants for scalp care.
- Onion seed oil, to support the scalp and reduce shedding.
- Black seed oil, to nourish and condition strands.
It is lightweight and fast-absorbing, suits all hair types, and is paraben and sulfate free.
How to use a hair oil for best results
- Part your hair into sections.
- Apply a small amount to the scalp with your fingertips.
- Massage gently in circles for 5 minutes.
- Run what is left on your fingers through the lengths.
- Leave it on for at least an hour, or overnight, then wash with a mild shampoo.
Two or three times a week is enough for most people.
Add a weekly mask
For extra conditioning, use a hair mask once a week. Our Root Revival Hair Mask combines amla, bhringraj and black sesame oil.
Common myths
- "More oil is better." A small amount massaged into the scalp works better than a heavy coating that needs three washes to remove.
- "Oil must stay on for days." An hour to overnight is enough. Leaving oil for days can build up on the scalp.
- "Onion seed oil smells like onions." Seed oil is very different from raw onion juice and is much easier to use.
- "Results show in a week." Hair grows slowly. Judge any routine over a few months, not days.
Habits that matter as much as oil
- Eat enough protein and iron-rich foods.
- Avoid tight hairstyles and very hot styling tools.
- Use a wide-tooth comb on wet hair.
- Manage stress and sleep well.
