Pro Retinol for Beginners: A Gentle Start to Anti-Aging Care

Retinol is one of the best-known ingredients in anti-aging skincare, and also one that people worry about trying. Pro retinol is a gentler way in. Here is what to know before you start.

Retinol vs pro retinol

"Pro retinol" usually refers to gentler forms of vitamin A that are often chosen by people new to the ingredient or with easily irritated skin. They are generally used to support smoother-looking skin and a softer look to fine lines over time.

Our Time Rewind Gel combines pro retinol with Swiss apple cell extract and hyaluronic acid in a lightweight gel for the face and neck.

How to start

  1. Patch-test first on a small area for a day.
  2. Start two or three nights a week, not every night.
  3. Apply to clean, dry skin with gentle upward strokes on the face and neck.
  4. Follow with moisturiser if your skin feels dry.
  5. Increase slowly to more nights if your skin is comfortable after two or three weeks.

Always wear sunscreen

Vitamin A products are best used at night, and daily sunscreen is essential while you use them. Sunscreen also protects against the sun damage that makes fine lines more visible in the first place.

What to pair it with

  • Hydration: hyaluronic acid, aloe vera and a good moisturiser.
  • Vitamin C in the morning, such as our Brightfix C-Serum, with vitamin A products kept for night.

What to avoid

  • Starting several new actives in the same week.
  • Using strong scrubs on the same night.
  • Applying on broken or sunburnt skin.
  • Using vitamin A products if you are pregnant or breastfeeding without checking with your doctor first.

A sample first month

Week Nights per week
Week 1 2 nights, with moisturiser after
Week 2 2 to 3 nights
Week 3 3 to 4 nights, if skin feels comfortable
Week 4 Every other night, or more if your skin is happy

Signs your skin needs a break

Some dryness or mild flaking can happen when you first start a vitamin A product. If you notice stinging, redness that lasts, or peeling, go back to fewer nights a week and focus on moisturiser. If irritation continues, stop using it.

When will I see a difference?

Anti-aging skincare rewards patience. Use it consistently for several weeks, take photos in the same light, and compare honestly.
