Room Heater and Skin: How to Stay Warm Without Dry, Tight Skin

In many parts of India, a room heater or blower is a winter essential. It makes cold nights bearable, but it also dries the air. Many people wake up with tight skin, dry lips and an itchy nose after a night with the heater on. You do not have to choose between warmth and comfortable skin.

How heaters affect skin

  • Dry air pulls moisture from skin and lips.
  • Sitting close to a heater can dry and heat one side of the face.
  • Long hours indoors with windows shut.
  • Less water drunk in cold weather.

Simple habits that help

  1. Keep a bowl of water in the room, or use a humidifier if you have one.
  2. Do not sit too close to the heater. Keep a safe distance.
  3. Moisturise face and body before bed.
  4. Apply lip balm at night.
  5. Keep a glass of water by your bed.
  6. Use the heater to warm the room, then switch it off or lower it, rather than running it all night.

Night routine for heater season

  • Cleanse gently with lukewarm water.
  • Apply a richer moisturiser than you use in summer. See gel vs cream for face.
  • Moisturise hands and feet and wear cotton socks if you like.
  • Use a lip balm.

Morning routine

  • Rinse or cleanse gently.
  • Moisturise.
  • Apply sunscreen before going out, even in winter.

Safety first

  • Follow the heater's instructions and never leave it unattended near curtains, bedding or children.
  • Never use a coal angithi or gas heater in a closed room. These can produce dangerous gases.
  • Keep some ventilation as advised for your heater type.
  • Do not dry clothes on the heater.

Office and car heaters

Heated offices and cars dry the air too. Keep a water bottle and a small moisturiser at your desk. See skincare for office workers and skincare for AC rooms.

Food and water

Warm soups, herbal teas and water all count towards your fluids. Read healthy drinks for glowing skin and winter diet for glowing skin.

Common mistakes

  • Sleeping with the heater on high all night.
  • Sitting right in front of a blower.
  • Taking very hot showers as well. See hot showers and skin.
  • Forgetting lips and hands.

When to see a doctor

If dry skin is very itchy, cracked or bleeding, or you have a rash that does not settle, see a doctor or dermatologist. If anyone feels dizzy, headachy or sleepy in a heated room, get fresh air at once and seek medical help.
