Skincare for Outdoor Workers: Sun, Dust and Long Days Outside

Delivery partners, construction workers, security staff, traffic police, farmers, vendors and field sales teams all spend long days outside. Hours of sun, dust, heat and sweat take a toll on skin. Skincare for outdoor workers has to be quick, cheap and practical, and a few habits make a real difference.

What outdoor work does to skin

  • Daily sun exposure on the face, neck, ears, arms and hands.
  • Dust and pollution settling on sweaty skin.
  • Dry, cracked lips from sun and wind.
  • Dehydration on hot days.
  • Rough hands from tools and materials.

Before work: 3 minutes

  1. Wash your face.
  2. Apply sunscreen to the face, neck, ears and the backs of the hands and arms.
  3. Apply lip balm.
  4. Cover up: a cap or hat, sunglasses and light long sleeves where your work allows.

During the day

  • Drink water regularly, not just when you feel thirsty.
  • Rest in shade when you can.
  • Wipe sweat with a clean cloth or handkerchief.
  • Reapply sunscreen at lunch if you can.
  • Follow your workplace's safety rules on protective gear.

After work: 3 minutes

  1. Wash your face gently with lukewarm water to remove sweat, dust and sunscreen.
  2. Wash your hands and arms.
  3. Moisturise face, neck and hands.
  4. Apply lip balm before bed.

A small kit for the day

  • Sunscreen
  • Lip balm
  • Water bottle
  • Clean handkerchief
  • Cap or scarf

Food and rest

  • Eat proper meals, with dal, vegetables, roti or rice and fruit.
  • Try buttermilk, lemon water or coconut water on hot days.
  • Sleep well to recover.

Warning signs

Heat can be dangerous. If you feel dizzy, confused, very weak or stop sweating in the heat, move to shade, drink water and get medical help. See a doctor for any spot on the skin that is new, changing, bleeding or not healing.

Do not forget hands, feet and lips
