Skincare Routine for Combination Skin: Oily T-Zone, Dry Cheeks
Share
Combination skin is one of the most common skin types, and one of the most confusing. Your forehead, nose and chin get shiny by lunchtime, while your cheeks feel normal or even tight. Products made for oily skin dry out your cheeks, and rich creams make your T-zone greasy. The answer is one routine, applied a little differently to each zone.
Do you have combination skin?
Wash your face, wait 30 minutes without applying anything, then press a tissue to different areas. If the tissue picks up oil from your forehead and nose but not from your cheeks, you most likely have combination skin. Many people find it changes with the seasons: oilier in summer and monsoon, drier in winter.
The core routine
Morning
- Gentle cleanser that does not leave cheeks tight. Avoid harsh foaming washes.
- Light serum all over, if you use one.
- Gel moisturiser all over. Add a little extra on the cheeks if they feel dry.
- Sunscreen with a light or matte finish.
Night
- Remove sunscreen and cleanse.
- Serum.
- Moisturiser by zone: a thin layer of gel on the T-zone and a richer cream on the cheeks.
Multi-masking: treat each zone separately
Once or twice a week, use a clay mask only on the oily areas. The Revive Face Mask combines multani mitti and kaolin to absorb excess oil and help unclog pores, with rose and aloe vera to soothe. Apply it to the forehead, nose and chin, leave for 10 to 15 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water. On the same night, your cheeks can have a hydrating product instead.
Textures that work well
- Gels and lotions rather than heavy creams for all-over use.
- Richer creams only where you need them.
- Hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and aloe vera, which suit both zones.
Habits that help
- Blot, do not wash, during the day. Blotting paper on the T-zone keeps shine down without drying the cheeks.
- Use lukewarm water. Hot water can leave cheeks tight.
- Adjust with the seasons. Lighter in humid months, a little richer in winter.
- Change pillowcases twice a week.
- Drink water and eat fresh food.
Common mistakes
- Treating your whole face as oily. This often leaves the cheeks dry and flaky.
- Using a heavy cream everywhere. This can clog the T-zone.
- Skipping moisturiser on the T-zone. It still needs a light layer.
- Scrubbing the nose daily to fight blackheads. Gentle weekly care works better.
Quick questions
Do I need two moisturisers? Not always. Many people manage with one gel moisturiser and an extra layer on the cheeks.
Can combination skin change over time? Yes. It often shifts with seasons, age and hormones, so check your skin every few months.
