Skincare Routine for Dry Skin: Simple Steps for Soft, Comfortable Skin
Share
Dry skin often feels tight after washing, looks a little dull, and can get rough or flaky, especially in winter or in air-conditioned rooms. The good news is that dry skin usually responds well to a simple, gentle routine. The aim is to clean without stripping, add water, and then hold that water in.
Signs your skin is on the dry side
- Your face feels tight within a few minutes of washing.
- Makeup clings to dry patches.
- Skin looks dull or rough, especially around the nose, cheeks and mouth.
- You rarely see shine, even by the end of the day.
Dry skin is a skin type. Dehydrated skin, which lacks water, can happen to any skin type, even oily skin. Many people have a bit of both, so the routine below covers water and moisture together.
Morning routine
- Rinse or use a gentle cleanser. If your skin is very dry, a splash of lukewarm water may be enough in the morning.
- Hydrating serum on damp skin. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin attract water. Applying them to slightly damp skin helps.
- Moisturiser. Choose a cream rather than a very light gel.
- Sunscreen. Every day, even when it is cloudy. A moisturising sunscreen suits dry skin well.
Night routine
- Cleanse gently to remove sunscreen and the day's dust. Avoid harsh foaming washes and scrubbing.
- Serum.
- A richer cream or an overnight mask as the last step, so skin has hours to soak it in.
Weekly care
- Exfoliate gently, no more than once a week, or skip it if your skin is flaky and sore.
- Clay masks less often. Clay absorbs oil, so dry skin may only need it occasionally, for a short time, and always with moisturiser after.
Habits that make a big difference
- Use lukewarm, not hot water. Hot showers feel lovely but leave skin drier.
- Moisturise within a few minutes of washing, while skin is still slightly damp.
- Pat, do not rub, with a soft towel.
- Drink water through the day and eat plenty of fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds.
- Do not forget your neck and hands. They get dry too.
- Go fragrance-light if your skin often feels itchy or uncomfortable.
Common mistakes
- Washing too often. Twice a day is plenty.
- Using products made for oily skin, such as strong mattifying cleansers.
- Trying many new products at once. Add one at a time, with a patch test.
- Skipping sunscreen in winter.

Quick questions
Can dry skin get pimples? Yes. Dry skin can still break out, so look for moisturisers labelled non-comedogenic if you are prone to spots.
Is oil a good moisturiser? Some people like a few drops of facial oil over their cream. Try it on a small area first.
When should I see a doctor? If your skin is cracked, bleeding, very itchy or does not improve with gentle care, see a dermatologist.
