Skincare Routine in Your 50s: Gentle Care for Comfortable, Glowing Skin
Share
By your 50s, you know your skin better than anyone. Many people notice it feels drier, more delicate and slower to bounce back than before. A good routine at this stage is about comfort, moisture and protection, done gently and consistently.
How skin often changes in your 50s
- It can feel drier and tighter, especially after washing.
- It may look thinner and less firm.
- Lines and age spots from years of sun can be more visible.
- It may become more sensitive to strong products.
- Hormonal changes around menopause can affect how skin feels for many women.
Everyone's skin is different, and none of this is a problem to fix. It is simply a reason to adjust your routine.
Morning routine
- Rinse with lukewarm water or use a creamy, gentle cleanser.
- Hydrating serum on damp skin, with ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin.
- A rich moisturiser for face, neck and chest.
- Sunscreen every day. It protects skin from further sun damage and helps keep tone more even.
Night routine
- Cleanse gently to remove sunscreen and the day's dust.
- A treatment step on some nights, such as a retinol-based cream, if your skin is comfortable with it.
- A nourishing cream or an overnight mask as the last step.
From Theraglam, the Night Repair Cream combines hyaluronic acid and retinol and is non-comedogenic, applied nightly after cleansing. The HydraRenew Collagen Overnight Mask combines hyaluronic acid, hydrolyzed collagen, multi-peptides and aloe vera, and is rinsed off in the morning. Many people alternate the two on different nights.
Go gentle
- Skip harsh scrubs. If you exfoliate, keep it gentle and occasional.
- Introduce retinol slowly, two or three nights a week, and stop if your skin feels sore.
- Pat products in instead of rubbing, especially around the eyes.
- Patch-test every new product on your inner arm first.
Do not forget
- Neck and chest: these show changes too and benefit from the same moisturiser and sunscreen.
- Hands: keep a hand cream near the sink and by the bed.
- Lips: a balm in the day and before bed.
Habits that help your glow
- Sleep: a calm, regular bedtime routine.
- Water: sip through the day rather than all at once.
- Food: vegetables, fruit, protein, nuts, seeds and healthy fats such as ghee in sensible amounts, or olive and sesame oil.
- Movement: walking, yoga or light strength exercise most days, as your health allows.
- Face massage: a few minutes of gentle massage with a little oil can feel relaxing and help a tired face look fresher.
Keep expectations kind
A routine cannot turn back the clock, and it does not need to. The goal is skin that feels comfortable, looks healthy and is protected from the sun. Give any new product about four weeks before deciding.
