Sleep and Your Skin: 9 Bedtime Habits for a Fresher Face
Share
Most of us have seen it in the mirror: after a short or restless night, the face looks tired, puffy or dull. After a good night, it looks fresher. Sleep is one of the simplest parts of a skin routine, and one of the easiest to neglect.
How sleep shows on your face
When you sleep badly, the signs are familiar: darker-looking under-eyes, puffiness, a dull tone and a face that simply looks tired. A regular, restful night will not replace skincare, but it gives everything else you do a better start.
9 bedtime habits for a fresher face
1. Keep a regular sleep time
Going to bed and waking up at about the same time every day, weekends included, is one of the most helpful sleep habits.
2. Aim for 7 to 9 hours
Most adults do best with seven to nine hours. Count back from your wake-up time to set your bedtime.
3. Put screens away 30 to 60 minutes before bed
Scrolling keeps the mind busy. Swap the phone for a book, music or your skincare routine.
4. Make your night skincare a wind-down ritual
Cleanse, apply serum, then cream, slowly and with attention. A short face massage turns it into a relaxing habit rather than a chore.
5. Never sleep in makeup
Remove makeup and sunscreen fully before bed so your skin starts the night clean.
6. Change your pillowcase often
Pillowcases collect oil, sweat and hair products. Changing them twice a week is a simple win, especially if you get breakouts.
7. Go easy on late caffeine and heavy dinners
Tea or coffee late in the day and large, spicy meals close to bedtime can make it harder to sleep well. Finish dinner two to three hours before bed if you can.
8. Keep the room cool, dark and quiet
A fan, blackout curtains or an eye mask can make a real difference.
9. Drink water through the day, not all at night
Stay hydrated during the day and slow down in the evening so you are not waking up through the night.
A calm night skincare routine
- Cleanse to remove the day's makeup, sunscreen and dirt.
- Serum on clean skin.
- Night cream such as Theraglam Night Repair Cream.
- Overnight mask a few nights a week, applied last. The HydraRenew Collagen Overnight Mask stays on while you sleep and rinses off in the morning.
Morning-after tips
- Splash your face with cool water to wake up your skin.
- Drink a glass of water before your tea or coffee.
- Get a few minutes of daylight to help set your body clock.
Quick questions
Does sleeping on your side affect your face? Some people notice creases on the side they sleep on. A soft, clean pillowcase can help it feel more comfortable.
Can a nap make up for a short night? A short nap can help you feel better, but a regular full night is what counts.
What if I cannot sleep at all? Ongoing trouble sleeping is worth discussing with a doctor.
