Travel Skincare Routine: Keeping Your Skin Happy on the Road

Travel is exciting, but it can be hard on your skin. Long flights, hotel air conditioning, different water and new weather can leave skin dry, dull or prone to breakouts. A simple travel routine and a few habits help.

What travel does to skin

  • Flights: cabin air is dry, and many people notice tight, dull skin after a long flight.
  • Weather changes: going from humid to dry, or hot to cold, means your usual routine may not fit.
  • Irregular sleep and meals: late nights, early checkouts and restaurant food all show on the face.
  • More sun: sightseeing often means hours outdoors.

What to pack

Keep it small. Decant into travel-size bottles where you can.

  • Gentle cleanser.
  • Moisturiser that suits your skin, plus a richer one if heading somewhere cold.
  • Sunscreen, more than you think you need.
  • Lip balm. Theraglam Lip Therapy Balm, made with wheat germ oil, cocoa butter, olive oil and almond oil, fits in any pocket.
  • Your one key serum, if you use one.
  • Makeup remover and a few cotton pads.
  • A clean face towel or a pack of soft tissues.

On the flight

  • Board with a clean, moisturised face. Skip heavy makeup.
  • Drink water through the flight and go easy on alcohol and caffeine.
  • Reapply moisturiser and lip balm on long flights.
  • Avoid touching your face; clean your hands before eating.

At your destination

Morning

  1. Cleanse or rinse.
  2. Moisturise.
  3. Sunscreen, and reapply if you are out all day.

Night

  1. Remove sunscreen and makeup fully, however late you get back.
  2. Cleanse.
  3. Serum and moisturiser.

Adjust to the weather

  • Beach or humid places: lighter gel moisturiser, more sunscreen, rinse after swimming.
  • Hills or cold places: richer moisturiser, lip balm often, sunscreen even in the cold.
  • Dry cities: moisturise on damp skin and drink plenty of water.

Habits on the road

  • Keep a water bottle with you.
  • Eat fruit and vegetables when you can find them.
  • Try to keep your sleep times close to normal.
  • Do not test new products while travelling.
  • Use a clean towel or tissues instead of shared hotel towels on your face.

Back home

Go back to your normal routine straight away. If your skin feels dry or congested, give it a few gentle days before using any strong products.
