Hair Care Before Your Wedding: A Simple Countdown Plan

Wedding hairstyles, from intricate buns and braids to a groom's sharp cut, look best on hair that is soft, shiny and well cared for. Hair takes time, so a simple plan started weeks before the wedding is far more useful than a rush in the final days. This plan works for brides, grooms and anyone with a big family wedding coming up.

8 to 12 weeks before

  • Start a regular oiling routine, once or twice a week before washing.
  • Add a hair mask 2 to 3 times a week.
  • Get a trim to tidy the ends.
  • Cut down on heat styling where you can.
  • Eat well and drink water every day.

Oiling

  1. Detangle gently.
  2. Warm a little oil between your palms.
  3. Massage into the scalp with your fingertips for a few minutes.
  4. Smooth along the lengths and ends.
  5. Leave for an hour or two, then wash.

The Hair Revival Oil is a 100ml oil with bhringraj, amla, onion seed and black seed oil. It has a lightweight, fast-absorbing formula, is made for all hair types and genders, and is paraben and sulfate-free.

Masks

The Root Revival Hair Mask combines amla, bhringraj and black sesame oil. Apply to damp hair, massage for 2 to 3 minutes, leave for 15 to 20 minutes and rinse. Use it 2 to 3 times a week through your countdown.

4 to 6 weeks before

  • Book a hair trial with your stylist and take photos.
  • Grooms: book a trial cut and decide on your beard style.
  • Plan your final trim 1 to 2 weeks before the wedding, so it has time to settle.
  • Keep up oiling and masks.

The final 2 weeks

  • Get your final trim.
  • Do not try new hair products, colours or treatments.
  • Keep your routine the same.
  • Sleep with hair loosely tied on a soft pillowcase.

The day before and on the day

  • Ask your stylist whether they want hair freshly washed or washed the day before. Many styles hold better on hair that is not freshly washed.
  • Avoid oiling right before styling unless your stylist asks for it, as it can make styles slip.
  • Keep a small kit: a comb, bobby pins, a soft hair tie and a scarf for outdoor functions.

Through the functions

Haldi, mehndi, sangeet and reception styles can mean heat, pins and spray several days in a row. Between functions:

  • Remove pins gently.
  • Detangle from the ends up with a wide-tooth comb.
  • Wash and use a mask when you have a day off.

Common mistakes

  • Starting a week before.
  • A dramatic cut or colour days before the wedding.
  • Trying a new product the night before.
  • Tight styles every day in the run-up.

Skin needs a plan too: see our bridal skincare countdown. If you notice unusual hair loss, see a doctor or dermatologist.
