Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide in Face Masks: What They Do

If you read the ingredient list on a clay face mask, you may see two names that sound more like a science class than skincare: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Both are common in cosmetics. Here is what they are and why they appear in masks.

What they are

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are white mineral powders. They have been used in cosmetics and personal care products for many years.

  • Zinc oxide is a fine white powder that is also well known as an ingredient in mineral sunscreens and soothing creams.
  • Titanium dioxide is a bright white mineral used to give products colour and opacity, and is also used in mineral sunscreens.

Why face masks use them

In a rinse-off mask, these minerals mostly help with the texture and feel of the product. They add body to the paste, help it spread in an even layer and give it a smooth, opaque finish. They work alongside clays, which absorb excess oil.

In the Revive Face Mask

The Revive Face Mask combines:

  • Multani mitti and kaolin, two clays that absorb excess oil and help unclog pores.
  • Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, the two mineral powders explained here.
  • Rose flower extract and aloe vera, for a soothing feel.
  • Kapoor kachri and haldi, and chandan and nagarmotha, traditional Ayurvedic ingredients.

Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes and use it 2 to 3 times a week.

Important: a mask is not sunscreen

Even though zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are used in sunscreens, a face mask that you rinse off after 15 minutes does not protect you from the sun. Keep wearing a separate sunscreen every morning.

How to use a mineral clay mask

  1. Cleanse your face and pat dry.
  2. Apply an even layer, avoiding the eyes and lips.
  3. Relax for 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Rinse with lukewarm water before the mask dries and cracks.
  5. Moisturise.

Who it suits

  • Oily and combination skin: a natural fit for the whole face or the T-zone.
  • Normal skin: once or twice a week.
  • Dry skin: use on oily areas only, less often, and moisturise well.
  • Sensitive skin: patch-test first.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking a mask replaces sunscreen.
  • Leaving it on until it cracks and pulls.
  • Scrubbing it off instead of rinsing gently.
  • Skipping moisturiser afterwards.

Quick questions

Will the mask leave a white cast? It is rinsed off, so any white colour washes away with water.

Can I use it on my neck? Many people extend a clay mask to the neck. Patch-test first and moisturise after.
