Face Yoga for Beginners: Where to Start and What to Expect

Face yoga is a set of simple facial exercises, stretches and massage moves that you do with your own hands and expressions. Many people enjoy it as a calming daily ritual and a way to pay attention to their face, neck and posture. If you are new to it, here is where to start.

What face yoga is

  • Exercises: holding or repeating expressions that work the muscles of the face and neck.
  • Stretches: gentle movements that release tension, such as around the jaw.
  • Massage: light strokes with fingertips or palms, usually upward and outward.
  • Relaxation: slow breathing and letting go of frowns and clenching.

Before you start

  • Clean hands and a clean face.
  • A little moisturiser or face oil for massage moves, so your fingers glide without tugging.
  • A mirror for the first few weeks, to check your form.
  • Light pressure. Nothing should hurt.
  • If you have a jaw problem, a recent injury or a skin condition, check with your doctor first.

A 7-minute beginner routine

1. Relax and breathe (1 minute)

Sit tall, drop your shoulders and take slow breaths. Notice any frowning or jaw clenching and let it go.

2. Forehead smoothing (1 minute)

Place your fingertips on your forehead and stroke gently upward from the brows to the hairline, one hand after the other.

3. Cheek lift (1 minute)

Smile with your lips closed, place your fingertips on the tops of your cheeks and lift them gently. Hold for 5 seconds, relax and repeat.

4. Eye area tap (1 minute)

Using your ring fingers, tap very lightly around the eye bone, from the inner corners outward.

5. Jaw release (1 minute)

Open your mouth gently, then close. With your knuckles, stroke along the jawline from chin to ears.

6. Neck stretch (1 minute)

Tilt your head back slightly and look up, then stroke your neck upward from collarbone to jaw with flat palms.

7. Finish (1 minute)

Press your warm palms over your face for a few seconds and breathe slowly.

Routines for each area

Once you are comfortable, try a routine focused on one area:

Building the habit

  • Pair it with something you already do, such as applying moisturiser at night.
  • Start with 5 to 7 minutes most days.
  • Take a photo in the same light every two weeks if you like to track changes.

Realistic expectations

Face yoga is a relaxing habit that many people enjoy. Results vary from person to person, and it works best alongside sleep, water, sunscreen and a simple skincare routine. No exercise stops natural ageing.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Pressing or pulling too hard.
  • Exercising on dry skin with no moisturiser.
  • Doing too much too soon.
  • Frowning or squinting while concentrating.
