How to Stick to a Skincare Routine: Habits That Make It Easy
Share
Most people do not struggle to start a skincare routine. They struggle to keep it going. The first week feels exciting, then a late night, a trip or a busy morning breaks the chain and the products sit unused on the shelf. The good news is that sticking to a routine is less about willpower and more about making it easy.
Why routines fall apart
- Too many steps. Eight products feel fun on day one and exhausting by day ten.
- No clear trigger. If skincare has no fixed moment in your day, it gets skipped.
- Products out of sight in a drawer or a bag.
- Expecting fast results. Most skincare is judged over weeks, so early motivation fades.
- Not knowing what each step is for. It is easy to drop a step you do not understand.
Start smaller than you think
A three-step routine you do every day beats a ten-step routine you do twice a week. Start with:
- Morning: cleanse, moisturise, sunscreen.
- Night: cleanse, moisturise.
Once that feels automatic, usually after a few weeks, add one targeted product, such as a serum or an overnight mask.
Attach skincare to something you already do
Habits stick better when they follow an existing habit:
- Brush your teeth, then cleanse.
- Put the kettle on, then apply sunscreen.
- Switch off the TV, then do your night routine.
Make it visible and easy
- Keep products by the sink in the order you use them.
- Keep sunscreen near the door or with your keys.
- Pack a small travel kit so trips do not break the chain.
- Keep a lip balm in your bag and on your bedside table.
Track your progress
Seeing change keeps you going. Take a photo in the same light every two weeks and compare. Our guide to tracking skin progress with photos shows how. A simple tick on a calendar for each day you complete your routine also helps.
Plan for bad days
- Have a minimum routine for tired nights: cleanse and moisturise, nothing else.
- Do not aim for perfect. Missing one night is fine. Missing a week is where routines end.
- Restart the next day without guilt.
Give it time
Many people judge a new routine over 8 to 12 weeks of steady use. Read more in how long skincare takes to show results.
A plan you understand is easier to follow
A routine is easier to keep when you know why each step is there. The Theraglam Glow Scan turns 3 photos and a short quiz into a personal skin routine with helpful ingredients, a diet and water plan, face massage moves with step-by-step diagrams and a daily to-do list. It also explains the science behind every tip, and includes your Glow Score and target so you have something to work towards.
Quick questions
How long does it take to build a skincare habit? It varies, but many people find a routine feels automatic after a few weeks of daily practice.
What if I forget my night routine? Keep a simple minimum, and keep products where you will see them before bed.
Should I change products if I see no results? Give each product several weeks first, unless it irritates your skin.
