Multani Mitti vs Kaolin Clay: How These Two Clays Differ
Share
Clay masks are a skincare staple, and two clays come up again and again: multani mitti and kaolin. Both are natural clays used to absorb oil and leave skin feeling fresh, but they have slightly different reputations. Here is how they compare.
Multani mitti
Multani mitti, also called Fuller's earth, has been used in Indian homes for generations as a face and hair pack. It is known as a strong oil-absorbing clay, which is why it is a favourite for oily skin and hot weather.
Kaolin
Kaolin, often called white clay or china clay, is widely used in cosmetics around the world. It is generally considered a gentler clay, so it is often chosen for normal, combination and more sensitive skin.

Why some masks use both
Combining the two gives a balance: multani mitti for oil absorption and kaolin for a gentler feel. The Revive Face Mask combines multani mitti and kaolin with rose flower extract, aloe vera, kapoor kachri and haldi, chandan and nagarmotha, plus zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes and use it 2 to 3 times a week.
Which suits your skin?

- Normal skin: kaolin or a blend, once or twice a week.
- Dry skin: use clay rarely and only on oily areas. Moisturise well after.
