Overnight Mask for Dry Skin: How to Use One for Softer Mornings

If your skin feels tight after washing, looks flaky around the nose or feels rough by evening, it may be dry. Dry skin often needs a little extra at night. An overnight mask is an easy way to add that step: you apply it before bed and rinse it off in the morning.

What an overnight mask is

An overnight mask, sometimes called a sleeping mask, is a leave-on treatment that goes on as the last step of your night routine. Unlike a wash-off clay mask, it stays on while you sleep.

Our overnight mask

The HydraRenew Collagen Overnight Mask contains hyaluronic acid, hydrolyzed collagen, multi-peptides and aloe vera. It is applied to the face and neck overnight and rinsed off in the morning, and it is made to leave no residue on your pillow. Read more in hyaluronic acid for skin and peptides in skincare.

How to use it

  1. Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and a mild face wash.
  2. Pat skin dry, leaving it slightly damp.
  3. Apply serum if you use one, and let it settle.
  4. Apply the overnight mask in an even layer over face and neck, avoiding the eyes.
  5. Go to bed.
  6. In the morning, rinse with lukewarm water, then follow with moisturiser and sunscreen.

How often?

Many people with dry skin use an overnight mask a few nights a week, and some use it more often in winter. Start with two or three nights a week and see how your skin feels.

A weekly plan for dry skin

Night Step
Mon, Wed, Fri Cleanse, serum, overnight mask
Other nights Cleanse, moisturiser or night cream
Every morning Rinse, moisturise, sunscreen

On nights you use an overnight mask, you usually do not need a separate night cream as well. See overnight mask vs night cream.

Habits that help dry skin

  • Use lukewarm, not hot, water.
  • Keep showers short.
  • Use a gentle face wash instead of harsh soap.
  • Moisturise within a few minutes of washing.
  • Drink water through the day.
  • Do not over-exfoliate.

Common mistakes

  • Applying it on dirty skin.
  • Using too thick a layer. An even, thin layer is enough.
  • Skipping sunscreen in the morning.
  • Using several new products at once.

When to see a doctor

If dryness comes with cracking, bleeding, strong itching or red patches that do not improve, see a dermatologist.
