Skincare for Long Drives: Sun Through Windows and Dry Car AC

Whether you drive for work or love road trips, hours in a car affect your skin. Sunlight comes through the windows, the AC dries the air, and long days on the road leave skin feeling tired. A few simple habits help your skin cope.

Why long drives affect skin

  • Sun through the window. Car windows reduce some sunlight, but many people notice more sun on the side of the face nearest the window over time.
  • Dry air. Hours of AC can leave skin and lips feeling tight.
  • Less water. Many drivers drink less to avoid stops.
  • Tired eyes and skin from long hours, early starts and late arrivals.
  • Snacks on the road, often fried and salty.

Before you set off

  1. Cleanse and moisturise.
  2. Apply sunscreen to the face, neck, ears and the backs of the hands and arms. Do not skip the side that faces the window.
  3. Apply lip balm.
  4. Wear sunglasses to reduce squinting and glare.

A simple car kit

  • Sunscreen for reapplying
  • Lip balm
  • A small moisturiser
  • A water bottle
  • Soft tissues or a clean cloth
  • Healthy snacks such as fruit, roasted chana or nuts

On the road

  • Reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours on long sunny drives, at a safe stop.
  • Drink water regularly, and plan short stops.
  • Point AC vents away from your face so the air does not blow straight on your skin.
  • Take breaks to stretch, rest your eyes and wash your face if you can.
  • Do not touch your face often with hands that have been on the steering wheel.

After the drive

  1. Cleanse gently to remove sunscreen, sweat and dust.
  2. Moisturise face and neck.
  3. Drink water and eat a proper meal.
  4. Sleep well before the next long day.

For people who drive every day

If you drive for work, sun on one side of the face adds up over months and years. Make sunscreen as routine as your seatbelt, keep a kit in the car and moisturise every night. Our guide to skincare for bike riders covers two-wheelers.

Quick questions

Do I need sunscreen inside a car? On long sunny drives, many people choose to wear it, especially on the side facing the window.

Why do my lips crack on road trips? Dry AC air and not drinking enough are common reasons. Reapply lip balm and keep water close.
