Nose Strips vs Face Scrub: Which Is Better for Blackheads?

Blackheads on the nose are one of the most common skin worries. Two popular ways to deal with them are nose strips and face scrubs. They work very differently, and both can irritate skin if overused. Here is how they compare.

How nose strips work

A nose strip sticks to damp skin, dries and is then peeled off, lifting some of the dirt and oil from the surface of the pores. It works on one small area, the nose.

The Charcoal Detox Nose Strips come in a pack of 12. They contain activated charcoal, tea tree oil, witch hazel and aloe vera, and are vegan and cruelty-free. Wet your nose, apply the strip, leave it for 10 to 15 minutes, then peel it off gently. Use them 1 to 2 times a week, with 3 days between uses.

How face scrubs work

A face scrub contains small particles that you rub over the skin to remove dead skin from the surface. It is used over a larger area. Scrubs vary a lot: some are gentle and fine, others are harsh and gritty.

Side by side

Nose strips Face scrub
Area Nose Face
How it works Sticks and lifts Rubbing with particles
Typical use 1 to 2 times a week Often once or twice a week
Main risk Pulling too hard, using too often Scrubbing too hard, rough particles

Which might suit you?

  • Blackheads mainly on the nose: nose strips target that area directly.
  • Rough texture all over: a gentle scrub may suit you more.
  • Sensitive skin: go gently with both, use less often and patch-test first.
  • Oily skin: many people add a clay mask too. The Revive Face Mask combines multani mitti and kaolin with rose, aloe vera, kapoor kachri, haldi, chandan and nagarmotha, plus zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes, 2 to 3 times a week.

Do not use both on the same day

Using a strip and a scrub on the same day can leave the nose sore and red. Space them out across the week.

How to use a nose strip gently

  1. Cleanse your face.
  2. Wet your nose well.
  3. Apply the strip and press it down.
  4. Leave for 10 to 15 minutes.
  5. Peel slowly from the edges inwards.
  6. Rinse and moisturise.

How to use a scrub gently

  1. Use a small amount on damp skin.
  2. Massage in light circles for 20 to 30 seconds.
  3. Avoid the eye area and any irritated skin.
  4. Rinse with lukewarm water and moisturise.

Common mistakes

  • Squeezing blackheads with fingers or nails.
  • Daily strips or scrubs.
  • Using strips on broken, sunburnt or irritated skin.
