How Often to Use a Clay Mask: A Simple Guide by Skin Type

Clay masks feel great: a few quiet minutes, then fresh-feeling skin. It is tempting to use one every day, but more is not better. Using a clay mask too often can leave skin tight and uncomfortable. Here is a simple guide to how often to mask, based on your skin type.

Our clay mask

The Revive Face Mask is made with multani mitti, kaolin clay, rose, aloe, kapoor kachri, haldi, chandan and nagarmotha, along with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes and use it 2 to 3 times a week. Read multani mitti vs kaolin clay.

How often, by skin type

Skin type Suggested frequency
Oily 2 to 3 times a week
Combination 2 to 3 times a week on the T-zone; less on the cheeks
Normal 1 to 2 times a week
Dry Once a week or less, for a shorter time
Sensitive Patch-test first; once a week at most, for a shorter time

How long to leave it on

Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes. Do not wait until the mask cracks and pulls at your skin. If your skin is dry or sensitive, start at the shorter end.

How to use it

  1. Cleanse and pat dry.
  2. Apply an even layer, avoiding the eyes and lips.
  3. Relax for 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Rinse with lukewarm water using soft circles.
  5. Pat dry and moisturise.

Follow with hydration

On mask nights, many people follow with the HydraRenew Collagen Overnight Mask, with hyaluronic acid, hydrolyzed collagen, multi-peptides and aloe vera. You apply it at night and rinse it off in the morning. Read clay mask vs overnight mask.

Signs you are masking too often

  • Skin feels tight for hours afterwards.
  • Flaky or rough patches appear.
  • Redness or stinging when you apply other products.
  • Skin feels oilier soon after, even though you are masking more.

If you notice these, cut back, moisturise well and give your skin a break.

Adjust with the seasons

  • Summer and monsoon: oily and combination skin may enjoy masking 2 to 3 times a week.
  • Winter: many people mask less often and moisturise more. See oily skin in winter.

Common mistakes

  • Masking every day.
  • Leaving it on until it cracks.
  • Scrubbing it off.
  • Using a clay mask and a nose strip on the same day.
  • Skipping moisturiser afterwards.
